TOY STORY

This Ferrari Testarossa is ‘the most expensive toy car in the world’ – are your kids worth the £75,000 price tag?

Half scale replica is one of only three in the world and will cost you almost as much as a full size 1980s Ferrari Testarossa

WITH a top speed of 25mph and an engine from a lawn-mower this is the slowest Ferrari ever made.

But it's also one of the most expensive toy cars in the world and is up for sale for £75,000.

The Ferrari Testarossa Spider - a half size replica of the 1980s supercar - is one of just three in the world originally built exclusively for Harrods 30 years ago.

It cost £35,000 when new but prices have soared and the "toy" is now worth almost as much as a full size model.

A 1991 example with a 500bhp race engine and 29,000 miles on the clock is currently on the market for £89,000.

The car aimed at kids aged five to nine was given the thumbs up by one lucky schoolboy.

Five-year-old petrolhead Seb Goss got behind the wheel of the car before it's sold.

Seb said: "It's great - I have only got little model one to play with at home but I would like a real one when I grow up."

The car has a fibreglass body with working doors, bonnet and boot. There's a petrol engine, pop-up headlights, full speedo and rev counter, a leather interior and official Ferrari steering wheel.

Owner Howard Watts, who runs Riddelsdell's Garage in Boxford, Suffolk said: "It's a real mini-classic, a unique little car with a terrific history - the makers had to get permission from Ferrari before they could build it.

"It was in a poor state and has taken us a year to get all the parts needed to restore it to its former glory and put it back into showroom condition.

"It may be classed as a toy but it is beautifully built and engineered and the attention to detail is quite remarkable.

The full scale Testarossa was made between 1984 and 1991

"We are officially the oldest garage in Europe - steam and traction engines used to be repaired here in the first decade of the last century - and having this wonderful toy car in our workshop has brought lots of smiles to everyone who has seen it.

"I have a collection of classic and performance cars including Porsches and Jaguars and the little Ferrari has been a great 'fun' addition but now I want to work on another restoration project - on a full-size car.

"It needs a very young driver who will appreciate it and be able to use it - though of course it is not street legal and cannot be driven on the roads."

The Testarossa was built by Ferrari between 1984 and 1991 at the Modena factory with a 12 cylinder five litre engine which developed 390bhp, reached 60mph in just over five seconds and had a top speed of 180mph.

Famous owners included singer Elton John, French actor Alain Delon and US star Tom Selleck.

A white Testarossa used in the "Miami Vice" series by TV detectives Crockett and Tubbs sold at auction nearly two years ago for £125,000.
