First look at Volkswagen’s NEW budget city car built to succeed beloved compact – with swish new design

It will be priced at an enticing £17,000

VOLKSWAGEN have given petrolheads a first look at their new budget-friendly city car that’s due to arrive in 2027.

The German giants released concept sketches of the upcoming motor - called the ID Every 1 - ahead of a full reveal next month.

The pint-sized hatchback is set to succeed the much-loved Up as the brand’s entry-level vehicle, and will be priced at an enticing £17,000.

Due to take the ID 1 name when it’s in production, VW say the release will be "attractive for a wide variety of user groups".

While no technical details have been shared just yet, the ID 1 is expected to have many of the underpinnings of the Polo-sized ID 2.

The concept sketches show the city car will have chunky, upright proportions and a new visage - as well as the brand’s new-look LED lighting signatures.

VW’s CEO Thomas Schäfer spoke passionately about the new model, saying: "An affordable, high-quality and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe: that's the Champions League of automotive engineering.”

On being the successor to the Up, the car giant’s technical development boss Kai Grünitz, added: “The 'ID 1' will be close to the Up regarding the usage of that car.

"There aren't so many possibilities to design a small vehicle for cities in terms of what it looks like.

“It will be a car that fits into the Volkswagen brand design DNA and functionality DNA but at a lower price.”

He also spoke of the importance of bringing an entry-level, small car to market.

“You need a smaller car that’s affordable for the broader customer base,” he said.

“That’s why we’re going for €25,000 for the ID 2all and we're invested in the development phase for a vehicle below €20,000. That’s Volkswagen.

“We have to go in that direction to convince our customers that EV is the right way.

“You need a car that really fits the customer demands in that price class. You don’t need high-end technology within these cars.”

This comes on the back of a mixed year for VW, as 2024 marked the 50th anniversay of the Golf – which we discussed at length with the Mk1 Golf Club.

However, the brand also announced in December that some 35,000 factory worker jobs were set to be cut.

They've started 2025 in a positive light, having slashed prices on their full range of electric motors, from the ID.3 hatchback to the modern classic ID. Buzz minibus.

That includes nearly £9,000 cut from their ID.5 coupe-SUV - championed for its roomy interior and large boot.
