DIESEL car owners are in luck as a number of second-hand models have soared in value recently.

Of the top ten cars that increased the most in value in January, six were diesel-fuelled - and they include everything from a luxury BMW to a budget Peugeot.

This is a surprise given that diesel engines are slowly being phased out by manufacturers, as they prioritise new EV models.

However, it seems that diesel lovers are rushing to get their hands on the old-fashioned motors before it's too late.

The data, compiled by valuation experts Cap HPI, showed that diesel was the only fuel type to increase in value overall last month - with a 0.2 per cent surge.

Meanwhile, hybrids flatlined, while petrol, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles all decreased in value.

So which diesel cars could spell the biggest profits for their owners?

Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport 2017 to 2020

This mid-sized family car has surged in value by a whopping 5.4%, according to last month's figures.

That equates to about £600 - a healthy increase for an older model.

It offers a luxury experience without a steep price tag - and comes complete with high-tech kit and safety features.

Renault Megane 2016 to 2021

Next up is this humble Renault Megane - an all-rounder that's also popular with families.

The hatchback/estate is swish-looking and packs a sporty punch.

Ford CEO Jim Farley makes shocking ‘petrol head’ confession after brand was forced to pull back its push toward more EVs

It has gone up by 5.1 per cent in value, just shy of the Vauxhall Insignia's windfall.

But, as its prior value was slightly less, potential profits still equate to £600.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer 2014 to 2022

This luxury Beamer is a smaller version of the brand's Grand Tourer.

The model has five seats, compared to its predecessor's seven - and only two rows.

The MPV has risen by 5 per cent on the nose - the equivalent of £652.

Peugeot 308 2013 to 2021

Peugeot's 308, meanwhile, has seen a surge of 4.9 per cent, or £531.

The hatchback/estate has five seats - but the back row's a little cramped for three adults.

So it's a good bet for smaller families looking to keep costs down - as it boasts fairly low running costs.

Kia Ceed 2018 to 2022

Up next, with another 4.9 per cent rise, is the Kia Ceed - a roomy family hatchback.

Owners could be in for a £557 if they decide to sell now.

BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer 2015 to 2021

And last up is another Beamer - this time the Gran Tourer.

It also saw an increase in value of 4.9 per cent, meaning potential profits of £779 owing to its higher starting value.
