One driver recalled seeing the white car billowing smoke

A MAJOR motorway was shut down after a car engulfed in flames forced drivers to take alternative routes.

Lanes were closed on the M40 after the blaze erupted shortly before 4.30pm yesterday between Lewknor and Milton Common.

Two of three lanes were blocked off as emergency services arrived on the scene.

One driver told the “I was passing the scene fairly soon after the incident.

“As the traffic started to build up there was only a small amount of smoke but then it was billowing very heavily.

“There was a white car with the doors closed and it was well ablaze.”

The road was re-opened at around 5.30pm.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Thames Valley Police have been contacted for comment.
