Meticulously restored Ford Escort with original 140mph speedometer hits the market for bargain sum

A METICULOUSLY restored Ford Escort with an original 140mph speedometer has hit the market for a bargain sum.

The Ford Mk1 Mexico was named after its victory in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally.

Images show the retro car finished in its launch colour of Sunset Red and white ¿go faster¿ stripes. GO BACK IN TIME in this 1972 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico at auction for just ¿50K. The car was built in May 1972 in Aveley and has been passed through four dealers, all huge Ford enthusiasts. Following its restoration in 2000 when the car was revealed on AVO National Day achieving a Third in Class and went onto the AVO Club Stand at the Classic and Sports Car NEC Show in November 2000. The car is fitted with a 4-cylinder 1600 GT crossflow engine with the 711M block providing 86bhp and offering the maximum speed of 100mph with little effort. The car can accelerate from 0-60mph in just under 11 seconds.
