Brit rock legend’s beloved Lamborghini dubbed one of the most ‘beautiful cars ever made’ sells for eye-watering price

A STYLISH Lamborghini once owned by a legend of British rock music has sold for an eye-watering price.

The 1970s supercar is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars ever made - and is today considered a true icon.

The evergreen Lambo Countach LP400, one of only 157 examples of the first-series LP400 ‘Periscopio’ models produced, was once the prized possession of Sir Rod Stewart.

The Maggie May singer owned the retro supercar for 25 years - having first acquired it while touring Australia.

According to GQ, Sir Rod loved the 180mph car so much when it was delivered to him that he kept it inside his music studio for at least two weeks while he was recording demos for his Blondes Have More Fun album.

As he was in Australia at the time, he opted for a rare right-hand drive model - one of only 20 - but upon returning to Los Angeles, he took the Countach with him and had it converted to left-hand drive.

The Scot then took the car to the United Kingdom in 1987, where it stayed until he sold it in 2002.

Boasting a near 4.0-litre V-12 engine that can produce 375 horsepower, the Countach remains one of the most famous cars of all time.

And with its distinctive wedge body, it's largely seen as one of the most beautiful cars in history.

The 'Periscopio' name is coined because of a unique feature: a periscope-style rear-view mirror located in the roof’s central dip to aid rear vision.

According to a listing published by famed auction house RM Sotheby's, the car's second owner retained its modifications, but its engine was overhauled, and it is believed to then have been converted to left-hand drive.

In 2013, it was sold again through a Paris dealer, and the new owner undertook a comprehensive series of works to return it to its original factory spec.

The modifications made during its first ownership were reversed, while remaining left-hand-drive.

In 2022, the Countach was subject to restoration work with Lamborghini Polo Storico, which totalled €60,500 - around £50,000.

This included work on the braking system, engine, electrical system, gearbox, and steering rack, and the interior was returned to the LP400 spec.

The listing states that the car eventually sold for €989,375 - which is roughly £840,000.

Sir Rod is a renowned petrolhead and collector of luxury cars, and recently sold a Ferrari F50 - one of only 349.

The 79-year-old bought the red sports car in 1997, and today it's considered one of Maranello's greatest ever driver's cars.

The music icon recently revealed he's reuniting with his The Faces bandmates to celebrate the iconic rock group's career.

Fresh off his solo European tour, Sir Rod isn't resting on his laurels and is keen to reignite the magic of the 70s with guitarist Ronnie Wood and drummer Kenney Jones.
