The street - in the city's student heartland - is lined with shops, pubs and restaurants.

Tickets for illegal parking range from around £40 to £120 depending on where the offence is committed and how quickly the fine is paid.

According to the council's website, drivers can get a 50 per cent discount if they pay their parking or bus lane fine within the timeframe shown on their penalty charge notice.

The information was gathered following Freedom of Information Act requests.

Meanwhile, drivers parking illegally on Madeira Drive, in Brighton and Hove, racked up £111,723.55 between August 2023 and August 2024.

The street stretches a mile-and-a-half along the seafront so it’s likely many tourists were slapped with fines.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s website states that a higher contravention fine or a bus lane fine costs £70 or £35 if paid within 14 days.

A lower contravention fine costs £50 or £25 if paid within two weeks.

Leeds City Council earned £85,165 in penalty charge notices in the same year on Great George Street, in the city centre.

Their website says that the most common reasons for receiving a PCN are parking without clearly displaying a valid pay and display ticket, parking without payment of the parking charge, parking for longer than permitted or driving in a bus lane during restricted hours.

Finally, Coventry City Council earned £16,967 on Trinity Street between August 2023 and August 2024.

This comes as a driver claimed that she was slapped with a £50 parking fine despite paying - thanks to a signage mix-up.

The mum slammed the fine as "wildly unreasonable" thanks to what she claimed was a confusing car park layout.
