A CAR expert has urged drivers not to "roll out the red carpet" to critters as "spider seasons" kicks off in earnest.

You can keep creepy crawlies at bay in a few quick and easy steps - including a DIY spray hack.

Arachnophobes look away as this time of year is the peak season for spiders to get out and about in the UK.

Mild temperatures combined with heavier rainfall make for ideal conditions for the bugs to mate.

It's not uncommon to find them crawling into your home through windows and doors but the same can be said for your car.

Thankfully, Graham Conway of has a number of tips you can use to keep them at bay.

He said: "Spiders will naturally gravitate towards dark, sheltered spaces - which includes any discarded bags, wrappers and cartons you might have lying around.

"By having a messy cabin you’re rolling out the red carpet for arachnids.

"Don’t be afraid of cleaning your vehicle’s interior regularly during spider season."

Hotspots include air vents, cup holders and any other nooks and crannies spides could shelter in.

Likewise, it's a good idea to get your door and boot seals checked at your local garage.

These can be replaced cheaply to block off any entry routes.

Another great way to ward off the creatures is to smother your car in scents that they find unattractive.

Lemon, orange and other citrus fruits can repel spiders as they don't like the high acidity.

Graham also shared a DIY recipe for an anti-spider spray which you can make by mixing vinegar, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil and cedarwood with a small amount of water and perfuming your car's interior.

Finally, he recommended removing any webs you see inside or outside your car so that spiders don't have anywhere to hide as you drive along.
