Hyundai Inster is £21k electric SUV with a cool party piece that means there’s no need to splash out on a pricey camper
WE love our two weeks of summer.
Pub gardens. Barbecues. Festivals. Getting back to nature. Camper vans. All of that good stuff.
The problem with the last one is that they’re expensive.
Take a Volkswagen California, the one we all want, that costs more than a two-up, two-down in Redcar.
Most of us haven’t got the mad skillz to convert an old Transporter with 300,000 miles on the clock.
The solution?

Get yourself a Hyundai Inster.
Yes, it’s a micro electric SUV made for pottering about. But it has a cool party piece.
Fold all the seats forward – even the driver’s seat – and you’ve got a double bed for camping.
There’s even a plug socket to boil a kettle for your chicken and mushroom Pot Noodle.

Inster will be with us early next year, starting from £21k.
The 42kWh standard range version will do up to 186 miles between charges and the faster 49kWh long range version will do closer to 220 miles.
Both get that versatile four-seat cabin loaded with twin screens, all sorts of anti-crash kit and modern recycled fabrics.
Other observations.
It wouldn’t be a Hyundai without a heated steering wheel.
There’s walk-through access up top. So you can park up tight against a wall and exit through the passenger door. The rear seats slide and recline.
Four dots on the steering wheel spell out “H” in Morse Code and change colour when you select reverse. Pixel lights are another Hyundai signature.
So, there you have it. Hyundai Inster.

There’s a glut of low-cost EVs on the way from the likes of Dacia, Citroen, Fiat, VW, Skoda, Seat and BYD but Inster has the jump on most of them AND works as a camper van.
Sleep on it.
