Hailing their "success of the week", the team at Money Saving Expert shared the experience of Helen, who went to renew her car insurance only to be slapped with a £230 price hike.

Helen recalled desperately haggling with her provider, who she said had "great customer service", only to be offered minimal savings.

Racked with anxiety over the rise, she turned to Martin's , available on the MSE website.

The smart feature tells drivers the best time to search for alternative policies and find the cheapest quotes on MoneySuperMarket.

As well as that, it will also compare each quote to see if you can find it cheaper through Direct Line, one of the UK's leading insurers, and provide links to other comparison sites.

And once you've picked a policy, it will let you know whether you can save even more through tricks like adding an additional driver and switching to a multicar deal.

You could even save hundreds while upgrading to comprehensive cover, giving you more for less.

Using the tool, Helen ended up cutting her costs by £160, effectively cutting the increase in her payments by 69%.

She said: "My motor policy renewal quote increased by £230 this year.

"I used your Compare+ Car Insurance tool to compare prices three weeks before renewal and managed to reduce my insurance costs by £159.

"Despite trying to haggle with my original insurers, who've given great customer service this year, I couldn't save half that amount so I've moved.

"Thank you. It's nice to feel someone's on my side for a change."

For anyone looking to follow Helen's example, Martin has previously revealed the best time to find the biggest deals on insurance.

Speaking on his ITV show, he said: "If you are near your renewal, getting quotes three weeks before may halve the costs.

"It bottoms out at exactly 23 days and the price starts to rise.

"So what everybody needs to do is get in your diary that 23 days before renewal - because that's the actual sweet spot."
