A MAJOR car brand has released a new hybrid version of a popular model with incredible fuel economy - and it's only £5,000 more.

The move means that the brand's entire lineup can now be purchased in either hybrid or full EV spec.

Vauxhall has announced that it will use the hybrid powertrain from its existing Corsa model to power a new variant of the Mokka.

It uses a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine combined with a 28-horsepower magnetic motor.

This replaces the turbocharged three-cylinder arrangement used in the petrol version.

The new model is capable of around half a mile of range using only its electric capability.

However, that can only be achieved by driving under 18mph.

For everyday driving, though, the hybrid system should still be able to top 100mph.

Its real talent, though, is in the realm of fuel economy.

The use of a hybrid system to supplement the petrol engine allows the Mokka Hybrid to stretch a tank further than its ICE sibling.

Vauxhall claims it will do as much as 57mpg as a result, compared to the 46mph achieved by the most efficient existing model.

And it will only be around £5,000 more than the original, starting at £25,320 for the base-level Griffin trim.

The mid-range GS version will then be £30,810 while the Mokka Ultimate will clock in at £34,115.

For reference, the base model is around £10,000 cheaper than the ever-popular Toyota Prius hybrid, as manufacturers pile into a race to the bottom on EV prices.

It comes after Richard Hammond spoke exclusively to The Sun as he drove Monty's Rolls-Royce to France for D-Day celebrations.
