Keeping an eye on your battery health and replacing it when it gets low could prevent other issues from surfacing in your motor, the mechanic claimed.

He added that a low battery could lead to "voltage surges" which can cause the vehicle to backfire.

Changing out the battery is usually an easy and cost-effective repair compared to the whopping fees for larger upgrades.

Road users who give their component a simple check occasionally end up paying just ten per cent of the price.

He revealed the tip on his YouTube channel, which is dedicated to improving motorist's experiences and minimise repair costs.

On his channel, Scotty said: "Because modern cars are all run by computers, if your battery is getting really bad it might still start the car but it’s so low on electricity the alternator has to put out too much electricity.

"You can get voltage surges that ruin computer components.

"My advice is if it says your battery is under 30 per cent left, get another battery."

New batteries in the UK can cost up to £100, according to BookMyGarage.

However, final bills would vary depending on a range of factors such as the type of car and the length of time stated on the battery product.

The expert mechanic added that failing to replace the battery when it's weak could lead to drivers having to change their alternator in the future, which is significantly more expensive.

Motorists can check their battery life with a simple diagnostics test which can cost as little as £30, at some providers.
