DEAL THE DEALER

I’ve been a car dealer for 43 years – never say four things if you want a good deal… slip of the tongue could cost you

The major red flag that buyers should keep an eye out for

A MOTORS expert who has flogged millions of cars has revealed the four things drivers should never say if they don't want to get ripped off.

Speaking on the CarEdge YouTube channel, Ray Shefska urged drivers to be wary of uttering these dreaded words if they want to scoop a good deal.

In the clip, Ray compiles the fatal errors customers commit when negotiating for a used motor.

Firstly, Ray urges punters to always insist on a pre-purchase inspection before putting forward a down payment on the vehicle.

"The more sets of eyes you have looking at that vehicle, looking for damage, things that need to be done, the more likely that you're going to find all the things that need to be done," Ray said.

The whizz also told buyers to be cautious when floggers suggest they fork out for an extended warranty to drive down the interest rate.

"The no-no there is that's what's known as Tied Selling," he reveals.

"Dealerships are not allowed to tie a cheaper interest rate to you buying an additional product.

"Whatever rate you qualify for is the rate you qualify for."

Another red flag from sellers is when they insist that a deal is only available for the next hour.

Ray warns: "Well, if a deal is only good for that hour, then it's good for the hour after that and the hour after that.

"Don't ever feel time pressured into buying what it is that you want to buy.

"There is no time constraint!"

The motors expert concludes by discouraging buyers from blurting out an arbitrary figure of what they believe they should pay.

"If you spit out a payment and you don't spit out a term to go along with that payment, there are any number of ways that the numbers can be manipulated to get you to the number that you want," he warned.

DEALERSHIP NEWS

It comes after one popular used car dealership announced it would close its doors for good - but a senior executive has ensured the decision was "through choice".

Motor Connect, based in Northwich, Cheshire, sells many makes and models from Ford and Vauxhall to VolvoBMWMercedes, and Audi.

The dealership's managing director Steve Corwood announced "big plans" were in motion which meant Motor Connect had to close.

In a post shared to social media this week, he explained that he and his family had decided to remain in Spain after moving there some time ago to establish Motor Connect Mallorca.

He said: "The jungle drums have been beating so it’s time for me to let you all know. The time has come for us to close the doors at Motor Connect.

"Firstly I want to thank all of our customers, partners and friends for your support over the years. I think it’s important for everyone to know that this is a decision through choice!"
