We review the Citroen Berlingo Desire (2007) from price to economy and all its features

CITROEN started a new niche when they tarted up their Berlingo van and turned it into a cheap and basic people carrier.

It was quickly followed by the Renault Kangoo, Peugeot Partner and Fiat Doblo – but Citroen remained leaders of the pack.

The Berlingo is an honest piece of motoring, unashamedly a van with windows, big on space, practical and cheap. Citroen always have an offer on the Berlingo and prices currently start at £8,295.

I’'ve just been testing the top-of-the-range Desire 1.6-litre turbo diesel which is available at £10,760.  Apart from the name – one look at the Berlingo tells you desire is the last thing on your mind – this is a workhorse for those who care little about styling.  There are plenty who want only a practical motor to go from A to B. And that is the Berlingo.

It has bags of room for five adults or move the seats and you can fit in even the kitchen sink, or in my case eight bags of rubbish for the tip.  The willing 1.6-litre turbo diesel is quick enough if you are in a hurry but cornering at speed is not recommended.

Citroen have done a reasonable job to spruce up the cabin, with colour-coded trim and useful equipment, but it remains a van at heart.  Yet most of all the Berlingo is affordable and practical for budget buyers.
