cutting-edge, smooth, quiet and refined

We review the Volvo V90 and S90 from price to economy and all its features

VOLVO has been on a roll of late, with the XC90 stealing some of Range Rover’s thunder thanks to its stylish exterior, impressive interior tech and range of engines.

That roll is set to continue as the Swedes usher in an era of ultra-sleek estates and saloons to rival the likes of Mercedes’ new E-Class and Audi’s A6.

“Thor’s Hammer” headlights complement a striking grille and a low and wide stance

Volvo’s S90 saloon (pictured above) and V90 (below) estate borrow many styling cues from their big SUV brother, with the same “Thor’s Hammer” headlights complementing a striking grille, a low and wide stance, plus the ace Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system.

Both cars get plenty of impressive kit as standard, including the touchscreen system, a power-operated boot, leather upholstery and a suite of cutting-edge driver-assist features.
Pilot Assist, for example, sees the car automatically stay in lane and cruise at any set speed up to 80mph, no longer requiring a vehicle to follow. It feels more fluid and natural than the adaptive cruise control found on rival vehicles.

Volvo will only offer two 1969cc, turbocharged four-cylinders diesel engines from launch. The lower-powered D4 unit develops 187bhp, while the larger D5 pumps out 232bhp. Both are incredibly smooth, quiet and refined.

The V90 estate will happily swallow 1,526-litres of stuff with the rear seats folded flat and we think it looks better than the saloon.

Great alternatives to the ubiquitous German offerings

Volvo has also just announced an R-Design trim level, which will add lots of racy touches, as well as a potent T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain that develops 402bhp yet returns 135mpg and can drive 28-miles on electric power alone.

Whatever your power preference, the V90 and S90 are great alternatives to the ubiquitous German offerings currently pounding the motorways.
