DRIVERS have been left raving by a "magic" de-icing hack that saves them from scraping the windscreen - but does it waste fuel?

Motoring experts from Driving Test Success posted the nifty trick to TikTok as an icy "Arctic blast" was predicted for the UK this week.

The Met Office suggests that temperatures could drop as low as -10C so sub-zero mornings are on the cards - and that means iced up windscreens.

Luckily, the team at DTS were on hand to share their top tips for clearing the frost fast.

In the social media clip, they said: "Frozen windscreen?

"Put the temperature on high. Put the front windscreen fan on max.

"The ice will start to melt from the heat.

"Wipe away excess water and return the fan to normal."

Commenters were quick to praise the advice, with one dubbing it "magic".

Another added: "I've learnt so much thanks to your app."

However, one user made the point that it would waste more fuel, even branding people "lazy" for not using an old-fashioned scraper.

It is true that using your heater on high uses up fuel by draining the car's battery, meaning more is needed to drive the alternator and recharge it.

Thinking purely from a fuel economy perspective, it does make more sense to use a scraper, even though it takes more time and effort.

Thankfully, there is a happy middle ground in the form of a 12p kitchen essential which can prevent ice from forming on your windshield at all.

It comes after an experienced mechanic revealed the one item you must keep in your car to avoid getting stranded in winter.
