A MAJOR car manufacturer has announced that it has axed a popular motor - and drivers are mourning the loss.

Ford confirmed that production for the Transit Connect will close down at the end of this year.

The stalwart vehicle was once a popular choice for small businesses.

It comes as rival manufacturers Chevrolet, Nissan and Ram pulled the plug on their compact van production.

Motor heads who want their Transit Connect fix will need to upgrade to the full-size transit vehicle.

Compact pickups such as the Ford Maverick are also a good alternative.

“In combination with our efforts to reduce global manufacturing cost and complexity, alongside decreased demand for the compact van segment, Ford Motor Company has made the decision to end importing Transit Connect cargo and passenger vans at the conclusion of this model year," .

Fans of the vehicle took to social media to express their disappointment.

One user said: "Oh no! Why discontinued them?"

A second chimed in: "Gutted to hear this, what a great motor!"

It comes as the UK's fastest-selling used car for this month has been revealed as a model that was discontinued three years ago.

Customers are rushing to buy the well-known hybrid on the resale market well after it was pulled from the manufacturer's lineup.

Figures from eBay Motors Group show that the Toyota Prius+ was hot property among second-hand buyers over the last 30 days.

The Japanese giant pulled the model in 2020 despite its cousin, the standard Prius, being one of their top sellers.
