Many owners associate the colder months with scraping the ice with an old CD case.

The Met Office has warned that snow could be just a few days away, experts have revealed three key steps which help prevent the problem.

Salt

To de-ice your car in a flash, mix one tablespoon of salt with 500ml of water.

Pour the mixture onto your windscreen and the salt will melt the ice away.

If you have a scraper, you can speed up the process by scraping off the ice as it begins to thaw.

Room Temperature Water

Pouring boiling water on a frozen windscreen can shatter the glass. This will result in a major repair job and insurance claim.

However room temperature water will remove the ice without the risk of a shattered windscreen.

Avoid de-icing

If you know that temperatures are set to plummet, simply mix some household vinegar with water. Spray the windscreen the night before to prevent ice forming.

Experts at insurance company Dayinsure also provided advice on how to ensure a car was property maintained in time for winter.

Their experts advised drivers to check oil and fluid, screen wash, tyres, lights, fuel and windscreen wipers before the winter season.

Non-profit housing organisation United Welsh posted the handy hack on its TikTok page

They said it would help motorists "save time in the frosty mornings".

With the weather turning cold and temperatures hitting zero this week, the useful trick is as needed as ever.

All you have to do is fill up a hot water bottle from the kettle to act as a makeshift radiator.

Simply place it on your dashboard beneath your window and the ice should melt away in moments.
