Major car brand launches new EV – and it’ll be on sale from next year
A LEADING car brand has launched a brand new electric vehicle which will go on sale next year.
Skoda says the new model is bigger than the outgoing version and will be available in both hatchback and estate layouts.
The new Superb can be specified with a choice between six engines, with three petrol sitting alongside a pair of diesels and a plug-in hybrid version with a claimed 62 miles of electric-only range.
At the top of the range sits the 1.5-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid. The whole system develops 201bhp and drives through a six-speed DSG automatic gearbox, while a 25.7kWh battery pack helps it to deliver that all-electric range.
The petrol version starts with a 1.5-litre unit with mild-hybrid assistance, followed by a 2.0-litre which is available in two states of tune. There is a 2.0-litre diesel available in both two- and four-wheel-drive with the latter bringing more power.
Oliver Stefani, Head of Skoda Design, said: "The Superb has traditionally shaped Skoda's design language and the fourth model generation will continue to do just that: its looks are characterised by sharply drawn lines, clearly defined and dynamic proportions and a modern sculptural and crystalline styling."
A spokesperson for the company said: "The exterior sketches show features of the new Modern Solid design language.
"It underscores Škoda Auto’s dedication to evolving its design philosophy while at the same time staying true to the renowned brand values such as practicality and spaciousness.
"The even longer and taller fourth-generation Superb comes with an enhanced aerodynamic performance and numerous highlights.
"Among other things, the headlights have become sharper and more crystalline, headroom and luggage compartment have grown considerably."
