Car maker loved by Brits SCRAPS plans for £1.7billion factory for flagship EVs in major blow to ‘high-volume’ motors

A CAR maker loved by Brits is scrapping plans for a £1.7billion factory for its flagship EVs - in a major blow to the "high-volume" motors.

Volkswagen will build its Trinity electric car at its current plant in Zwickau, Germany - not the purpose-built €2billion (£1.7billion) factory it had originally planned.

The Zwickau plant will get a massive makeover so it is able to build the Trinity range and the "high-volume" electric Mk 9 Golf.

The plant in the eastern state of Saxony already makes EVs including the Cupra Born, the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5.

Volkswagen also plans to build an electric SUV at its plant in Wolfsburg, north Germany from 2026 onwards.

The car-making giant will also produce the current Golf model and the next-generation Tiguan at the Wolfsburg factory.

It comes after the Volkswagen Group said that it will stop making Seat cars including the Ibiza and Leon models.

Chairman Thomas Schafer said that some Seat models like the Leon hatchback will be rebranded as "Cupra" motors.

It is not yet known what will happen to current Seat dealerships in the UK.

But Seat could soon make a comeback - as an e-scooter brand.

Last year the Spanish car maker launched the Mó eScooter electric moped, which has a range of 85 miles. This is despite some cities, like Paris, taking actions against electric scooters.

Seat expanded its moped range earlier this year with the Mó 125 Performance scooter, which has a higher top speed and range than the standard model.

The Performance moped charged in six to eight hours and comes in two colours - Tarifa Blue and Barcelona Grey.
