I drove an EV until the battery went down like a rocket – I was stranded… but the trouble didn’t stop there

AN EV driver was left fuming after the battery went down like a rocket and he became stranded.

Motorist Bjørn Nyland took to social media to reveal his ordeal with the electric vehicle.

The car enthusiast posted a video on YouTube explaining his EV nightmare to his more than 300,00 subscribers.

He took a BYD Atto 3 to a range drive test to check how well it can perform.

The £36k fully-electric vehicle boasts a 60kWh battery and 260 miles of range when fully charged.

But the motors expert decided to drive it until it died to see how far it can go with minimum battery.

He said: "I'm going to show you guys what happens when we drive the car empty.

"I experienced this unintentionally when I was doing a range test and it went from four percent to zero instantly.

"But we'll see what happens now."

The clip shows how the driver jumps in the car with eight percent of battery and hits the road.

As he accelerates along hills and bumpy roads, the battery starts to drop at alarming speed.

The driver said: "Even though the car claims you have 24km of range left it can drop to zero after four percent."

The content creator then decides to stop the vehicle to check how much range he has left.

The control screen shows the discharge power plummeting down at a shocking level.

The frustrated EV driver screamed: "Look at that, it's happening really quick now. It goes down like a rocket."

But his range test became a real nightmare when he realised his plug-in energy tester said the vehicle has 2kw of power left, while the motor's display screen had a different figure.

He said: "I just noticed that's the power limit crawling down. I almost didn't see it."

But the screen display seems to show one per cent left of battery.

When the display screen and battery are uncalibrated in an EV, the screen may show more mileage left - which can be confusing to drivers.

The content creator said: "Maybe after my incident, the battery might have been uncalibrated.

"But now since it died it calibrated again."

Once the car finally dropped to zero battery, he put the vehicle to the crawling test.

However, at 2.18 of voltage the car struggled to break and kept going for more than 300 metres - with still 8 kw of crawl.

After a few more metres, the EV completely died and the driver was able to recharge the car with an EcoFlow portable battery.

It comes as the same motorist previously bought an EV and drove it until it died.

The car enthusiast posted a video on YouTube revealing his experience with the £28,755 Kia Niro.

Elsewhere, another man who purchased the UK's cheapest electrical vehicle and drove it until it died said the range is half of other motors.

Rory picked up the Nissan Leaf from AutoTrader before taking it out for a range test.
