As Brits try to save the pennies where possible, one expert has revealed a simple hack which could help save 20 per cent of your fuel each journey.

For those who use their car daily and drive it on the motorway, one way to make sure you're not burning through fuel is to check your tyre tread depth.

The more your tyres become worn out through road exposure, the more rolling resistance you have - meaning you have more contact with the road.

And this means the friction between the road and the tyres increases with the car's fuel consumption being hit hard.

One hack to avoid spending more money and make sure your tyre tread depth is spot on, is to use a 20p coin.

Kwik Fit had advised drivers that they should regularly insert the coin into the groove of a tyre.

The distance between the edge and outer band of the coin should be the legal tread death measurement of 1.6mm.

Jack Dreyer, member of the digital team at Kwik Fit, explained how the tread depth can make a difference.

He said: "As your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, it is crucial that they are in good condition for vehicle, driver, and passenger safety.

"However, drivers often don’t realise the importance of tread depth and ensuring that it is maintained.

"In a survey undertaken in 2020, a staggering 69 percent of drivers questioned were not aware of the legal minimum tyre tread depth for the UK!”

It comes after drives realised a 99p hack could get rid of the scratches on your car in seconds.

And one social media user revealed a 58p hack for keeping your vehicle spotless.
