AN EXPERT mechanic has revealed a free check before a long drive which could save your LIFE.
Scotty Kilmer said the number one cause of a car dying while it drives down the road is a worn out alternator.

He then suggested a quick tip which will help drivers avoid expensive repairs and issues.
On his popular Youtube channel, Kilmer said: "The worst thing that can happen to you while driving is having your car just stop running while you're going down the road."
Scotty continued: "Your alternator supplies electricity to the car so if it goes bad your car will then run off the electricity from the battery.
"Just like an electric car, when the battery gets depleted it will stop running."

Drivers can now check vehicles themselves to find out exactly what is wrong without spending a penny on expensive mechanics.
He described to his audience of over 70k followers how to check their alternator.
Kilmer said: "If you've got one of these battery jump boxes, just connect it to the car.
"After it starts, if you disconnect the battery jump cable and it dies, that means the alternator is not working."
