Classic Ford Escort McRae rally car up for auction and set to go for a jaw-dropping price

A RARE classic Mk2 Ford Escort built to rally ace Colin McRae’s personal specification is up for auction and set to fetch an eye-watering price.

The special rally car is a true one-of-a-kind and has a guide price of £125,000 - £150,000.

Silverstone auctions who are handling the sale claim the Escort was Colin McRae’s final rally car, while the motor is now on offer direct from the late racer’s family.

The background to the car is particularly remarkable, as the build project was directly commissioned by McRae IN 2002 - with race prep specialist DJM completing the work.

Dave Plant, who works for DJM, recounts: “Colin first visited our workshop in April 2003 to see how his ‘toy’ was shaping up.

“He took a particular shine to our brand new, 4WD tarmac-spec KA rally car and it became apparent to him that we were a ‘one-stop shop’ and were able to bring WRC attributes to any vehicle.

“This led to us doing more work than was initially intended and it was decided on that day that the project was now to be a turn-key rally car designed to be as lightweight, compliant and agile as we could make it.”

There are too many technical mods to mention, but the headline points are that the Escort is powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine, producing a mammoth 330bhp while it only weighs 930kg which makes for excellent handling and agility on slippery rally stages.

Silverstone Auctions said: “This remarkable Escort (and a 1986 Talbot that is also up at auction) last used by Colin in 2007 effectively ‘bookend’ his career and make these cars so special, particularly as they are for sale for the first time and directly from the McRae family.

The auction takes place over the 25th/26th August, so there’s still plenty of time for bidders to think about an offer - if you’ve got deep enough pockets.
