CAR BLIMEY

Classic 90s Ford Escort Cosworth sells for world record sum after being sold at auction in bidding war

A FORD Escort Cosworth - one of only a few remaining - has been sold at auction for a whopping world record sum.

The 1996 Ford Escort Cosworth Lux sparked a bidding war as it boasted the lowest known mileage on a car of its type - chalking up a paltry 76 miles.

The vehicle has never had its front number plate attached and maintained its original bumper when it went under the hammer.

One of the last Escort Cosworth Lux versions produced, the motor has had only two previous owners.

The car was sold for a staggering £163,125.

Silverstone Auctions, who orchestrated the sale, had described the Lux model as one of the best of its type they’ve seen and in ‘as new’ condition.

At the car's launch in 1994, two models were available - the Club-spec standard car and the 'Lux' version, which included electric windows, heated screen, sunroof, and Recaro seats.

It has a two litre, 227bhp engine with a top speed of over 130 mph, as well as electric windows, a heated screen and Recaro seats.

A Silverstone Auctions spokesperson said: "This particular Escort could only be described as an unrepeatable car in terms of its originality and 'as new' condition.

"The car was one of the very last Escort Cosworth Lux's produced, and astonishingly had been enjoyed by just two keepers from new.

"The first owner kept the car of his dreams for 13 years and our collector vendor acquired it 14 years ago.

"When he set out to find the best example available, he found this one.

"Amazingly, the car has never had the front number plates attached and consequently, the front bumper is exactly as it was some 27-years ago and doesn't even have the Ford lug-holes drilled.

"Naturally, it would be incorrect to describe anything that's nearly 30 years old as 'new' or 'almost new' but this remarkable little Cossie is about as close as you are likely to get."

It comes after the world's "most dangerous" car was sold for the eye-watering sum of £600,000 at auction - the only one of its kind ever built.

Meanwhile, a "Special Edition" 1985 Ford Escort 1.6I Cabriolet clocking up under 27k miles will be sold to the highest bidder when the online action ends on Friday 26th May.
