ONE of the main issues that people have with buying a new electric car is the high price charged by manufacturers for a battery-powered model.
Compared to a regular petrol or diesel-powered car, an EV will almost certainly cost you quite a bit more when it comes to signing on the dotted line.
Handily, the experts at Auto Express have put together a list of the cheapest electric models you can buy in the UK right now.
Here, we roundup the cheapest EVs currently on sale in the UK - would you make the swap to electric?
1. Citroen Ami - £8,696
If your lifestyle suits the Ami's dinky proportions, then the small Citroen could make a useful city runaround.
The official range for the Ami is 46 miles between charges, although Citroen says its tiny battery can be charged to full in as little as three hours.
2. Smart EQ Fortwo - £22,225
The Smart EQ fortwo is a bit more usable than the Ami - coming with 80bhp, and a top speed of 81mph.
The fortwo is also surprisingly rapid, with 0-62mph covered in 11.6 seconds.
Get yourself a home wallbox charger and topping it up from 10-80% takes just over 3 hours.
3. MG 4 EV - £26,995
MG has really hit a home run with the MG4 EV - it's competitively priced, but doesn't fail in key areas such as practicality, driving dynamics and onboard tech.

The 0-62mph sprint is dispatched in 7.5 seconds, while the MG4 has 150kW rapid charging ability, which means you shouldn't have to wait too long if you're topping up at a suitable public charger.
4. Fiat 500 - £28,195
The Fiat 500 is instantly recognisable as a retro classic, while the all-electric model makes things even better.
Buyers have two options to choose from - either a 94bhp or a 113bhp version, with the more powerful model capable of covering up to 199 miles on a single charge.
5. Nissan Leaf - £28,995
The Nissan Leaf was launched in 2010 and still offers an impressive overall package - comfortable, easy to drive and plenty of space for the family.
Again, there are two battery options to choose from: a 39kWh version giving you up to 168 miles of range (but more like 100 miles in colder weather), and a 59kWh option with up to 239 miles.
