It was bought from new by a car fanatic who had intended to drive it but it ended up being stored in his garage for 18 years.

As a result the barely-used 'Hot Hatch' is in pristine condition.

The bright blue Clio has a 3-litre V6 engine which produces 255bhp, and will also be sold with the original logbook complete with the owner's manual and a Renault "Accident Management Pack".

It is being sold by Anglia Car Auctions of King's Lynn, Norfolk, where it is expected to break the record amount paid for a Renault Clio which stands at £92,000.

Auctioneer Guy Snelling said: "It's an absolutely lovely car, I suspect it is the lowest mileage Clio in the UK, if not the world.

"It has been kept in the vendor's garage and only ever taken out on special occasions. As a result it has covered just 22 miles since 2010.

"For all of his more routine trips he had a Land Rover Discovery which has racked up significantly more miles.

"The owner is coming up to retirement and moving house. He didn't fancy building an extra garage for the Clio.

"He wants to pass it on to another owner who will treasure it as he has.

"Cars like this just aren't being made anymore, it's got too much attitude, it's an eighties car built in the 2000s."

Guy added: "It is in the perfect 'Iliad Blue' as any French car should be.

"It is in absolutely pristine condition, it's as close as you can get to buying it brand new.

"The previous world record sale of a Renault Clio was set by a car that had done around 17,000 miles and that was regarded as remarkable at the time.

"This blows that mileage out of the water, I never like to make predictions but this car deserves to set the world record."

The sale will take place on April 2.
