BMW reveals 3 Series of the future with ‘E Ink’ paint offering 32 colours on demand and crazy head-up display

BMW has revealed its bold new i Vision Dee at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Although just a concept for now, it hints at some of the styling and tech planned for the next electric BMW 3 Series coming to Britain.

In fact, the whole car is covered in what BMW calls E Ink, which can be swapped to one of 32 colours on demand.

As you can see in these images, that doesn't mean you have to go for just one - patterns are possible too, as there are 240 individually controlled panels.

The windows can display personalised welcome messages, digital icons and an avatar of the driver in full colour.

It's no less crazy on the inside.

The big news is a huge head-up display that can take up the entire width of the windscreen if you want it to.

There's no central infotainment system and screen, just the head-up display, controlled via touch-sensitive buttons and sliders on the fabric dashboard.

There's no word on the battery and motor, although BMW has confirmed it's working on new cylindrical battery tech that will dramatically improve range and charge times.

BMW's head of design Adrian van Hooydonk said: “With the BMW i Vision Dee, we are showing how the car can be seamlessly integrated into your daily digital life.

"It becomes your portal to the digital world – with the driver always in control. Implemented in the right way, technology will create worthwhile experiences, make you a better driver and simply bring humans and machines closer together.”
