The replica was up for auction with Heritage Auctions.

Real California Spyder models are one of the most desirable classic cars and can go for millions.

That's why producers had a highly detailed copy made by Modena Design & Development.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions explained: "This 'crash car' was built and used solely for this memorable sequence as it hurled backwards through the glass of Cameron's father's garage falling to the ground below.

"This 'car' is a prop and not a functioning automobile. There is no engine or drivetrain present."

The car has a fibreglass body bolted to a rolling chassis.

It's also kitted out with tan vinyl seats, a matte black fibreglass dashboard with instrumentation and a wood-trimmed steering wheel.

The patterned sweater vest worn by the actor Matthew Broderick throughout the film was also sold for £118,271.
