SCHOOL RUN NIGHTMARE

We’re forming a human picket line outside our school every day to stop bad drivers – we refuse to move

PARENTS are forming a human picket line outside their kids' school every day to stop bad drivers.

In a bid to end dangerous parking after a series of near misses, fed-up parents have taken matters into their own hands.

The group of worried mums and dads are standing firm in their fight and have gained attention in the last few days as they line up outside Newcroft Primary Academy in Loughborough.

Standing on the paths where drivers are causing problems has meant zig zag lined areas directly outside the school cannot currently be parked on.

One parent involved, Kelly Colk, told : “We shouldn’t have to do this, but we feel we must as people are being put at risk all the time.

The campaign started last Thursday and parents have vowed they won't stop until a change is made.

"We saw one car reverse up onto the road where a parent and pushchair was and the driver didn’t even notice them," Kelly added.

She believes nothing will be done until something terrible happens, urging the local council to put parking or waiting restrictions in place.

According to the parents, complaints made to the county council have been ignored.

A Leicestershire County Council spokesperson said: “We’re aware of parents’ concerns.

"There’s no easy solution to dangerous parking outside schools, but we would encourage Newcroft to work with us and the local community to develop a travel plan aimed at promoting alternatives to travelling to school by car.

"We can confirm that the zig-zag markings outside the school are enforceable by camera car, and we’ll continue to ensure that visits are made to undertake any necessary enforcement.”
