Do I need a licence to tow a horse trailer?

In December 2021, new towing laws came into effect which scrapped the car and trailer towing test.

Before getting behind the wheel, you will need to make sure that that you have the right licence for the job.

And some road users will need to get an additional, special licence to be authorised to tow a horse trailer.

The criteria you need to take into account is the vehicle and trailer combination you have, as well as the date you got your driving licence.

An important concept to be aware of, is the MAM - Maximum Authorised Mass.

This means the weight of your vehicle after the trailer and horse are loaded up.

You may be able to find out your vehicle's MAM by looking at its vehicle identification number plate, typically under the bonnet or inside the driver's door.

If you passed your driving test after January 1, 1997, then you are allowed to tow 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer is not more than 3,500kg.

B on your licence means you can drive a car, with E indicating you can drive a car and horse box trailer of up to 3,500kg.

If you fail to have the correct licence, this can result in a hefty fine, points on your licence, and on occasion, jail time.

Of course you will need to make sure that you have the correct vehicle to pull a trailer.

Do you need insurance to pull a horse trailer?

You are not legally required to take out independent insurance to pull a horse trailer, although it is advised.

If you take out horsebox insurance, you will be covered on theft or damages to your horsebox, as well as your additional possessions inside.

However, if your horsebox is motorised then vehicle insurance is a legal requirement.
