NICE NISSAN

I drove the Nissan Qashqai E-Power – it’s a great family SUV that’s like an electric car but without the charging hassle

THERE are a few things humankind has always needed to survive.
Oxygen, water, food . . . and LISTS.

We as a species are fascinated by lists but also fall apart without them.

It starts as a kiddie sending a list to Santa, who’s working through his own naughty and nice list right now.

Then it goes all the way through to the end when you create a bucket list of things to do before you kick it.

In between, there are shopping lists, to-do lists, chores lists, holiday packing lists and so on, and we are massively influenced by lists of the top songs, movies, books and games.

You know that film must be good because it’s number three on the list of what’s trending on Netflix.

Which brings me nicely to the Nissan Qashqai, No1 on the list of Britain’s best-selling cars for September.

Here’s a list of reasons just why it is so popular:

  • Looks
  • Economy
  • Practicality
  • Safety
  • Luxury
  • Tech
  • Easy to drive
  • Easy to park
  • Most of all, value.

It starts at £26k, so you don’t have to make The Sunday Times Rich List to afford one.

We’ll come to the lush cabin in a bit because the latest update is the new e-Power hybrid, which thinks it’s an electric car but doesn’t have a plug.

Basically, the 1.5-litre petrol charges an e-motor which powers the front wheels.

It sets off smoothly and silently like an EV and if you are good at anticipating traffic flow, you’ll hardly ever need to touch the brake. The e-Pedal mode harvests energy as you coast.

It’s nippy too. As fast as many hatchbacks. Hurry it and that’s the only time you really hear the engine wake up.

Then there’s the economy. We averaged 54mpg on motorway runs – better than some diesels – and it’ll do more than 600 miles on a tank.

I’d say e-Power is perhaps the perfect compromise for now.

You get the benefits of an EV without the inconvenience of charging or worrying about how far you can go.

As for the interior, Qashqai is next-level compared to the car it replaced.

Not just the twin screens and Google services but head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay, wifi for seven devices and little luxuries like heated steering wheel and massaging seats for the first time.

The chunky foot rest and padded knee rest also please.

The rear doors open wider to 85 degrees, making it easier to load the ankle biters. The seats are wipe-clean. There’s more head and knee room in the back. The boot is bigger too.

It’s absolutely brimming with driver- assistance kit but the one you’ll like most is the 360-degree camera for parking anywhere like a pro.
