Will the new Volkswagen ID.Aero dethrone Tesla’s Model 3 as Britain’s favourite electric car?

VOLKSWAGEN has revealed its new ID.Aero electric car, which will go head-to-head with the Tesla Model 3.

The Model 3 is currently the best-selling EV in Britain, while VW and Tesla are battling it out to be the largest and most valuable car company in the world.

The ID.Aero is a similar size to VW's Passat and will eventually come as an estate too.

The production version will get a 77kWh hour battery allowing the ID.Aero to go 385 miles between charges.

On paper that's a touch more than the Model 3's 374 miles, but real-world figures are often lower.

We expect a 10-80% to happen in less than half an hour, although official figures are yet to be confirmed.

The ID.Aero is still officially a concept, but VW says what we see here is very close to the one we'll see on our roads.

It has been designed around aerodynamics - VW says the ID.Aero has an 'excellent drag coefficient of 0.23' making it the most aerodynamic of its EVs to date.

That has helped contribute to its official WLTP range of 620km.

VW hasn't given much away on the dimensions except that it is nearly five meters long and will have wheels up to 22 inches in size.

We can see from these images it'll get a prominent illuminated VW badge above a blanked-off 'grille' section and sharp inset LED headlights connected by a light bar.

Down its sides you'll notice there are no door handles - VW calls them 'illuminated touch surfaces.'

There's another light bar at the rear connecting the rear lights, which appear to have a honeycomb-type design. The rear VW badge is also illuminated but in red.

The ID.Aero will go on sale in China next year, with right-hand drive British cars arriving in the first half of 2024.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but somewhere in region of £45,000 seems a reasonable guess.
