THIS is the shocking moment a driver smashed into a bike - with the cyclist smashing into his windscreen.

Plumber Ian Payne, 68, turned off a road when the rider emerged from an island behind a parked van, bounced off the windscreen and fell down.

The cyclist, wearing only a baseball cap and no helmet in Portsmouth, Hampshire, last month, cracked the glass before howling in pain.

Ian, who feared the rider was dead, insisted he was not in the wrong and shouted at passers-by: "That wasn't my fault."

Cyclists are banned from riding on pavements unless they are in a designated cycle lane under highway code rules.

Dad-of-five Ian also alleged the cyclist admitted to drinking before riding but left before police and an ambulance arrived.

He said: "It happened so quickly for me.

"Obviously I was quite gutted for him at first but when he told me he was not sober then I thought if I was driving down the road with one of my kids in the car it could have been a lot worse.

"I feel that he put other people in danger by behaving like that."

Ian insisted he went round the bend at around 18mph when the bike suddenly appeared.

He said the bike came off the footpath and onto the island before hitting him, adding: "He was so fast.

"It was just a shock at first. I did turn round and swear and shout at those guys fixing the lights, 'It's not my fault', but I think that was just the shock of the moment.

"I always thought I was a careful driver anyway, he was just going so fast I could never stop him.

"There was space for him to stop so really he should have stopped on the other side of the road.

"I was shaking a little bit. I had to take a few minutes to get myself back because I did feel a little bit shocked.

"It did shake me up. The first hour I had to have a couple of cigarettes.

"When he went down, I thought he was dead because of the force he hit the window screen. The window screen was smashed right in.

"The way that his head hit it, I just can’t believe that he walked away."
