Toyota promises 30 electric vehicles within the next eight years, starting with this incredible line-up

“WELCOME to our showroom of the future,” said Toyota boss Akio Toyoda.

He wasn’t kidding.

Toyota has promised 30 electric vehicles within the next eight years, starting with this incredible line-up.

The other adult toy shop if you like. With batteries included.

As you can see, Toyota has got everyone and everything covered: Sports cars, pick-up trucks, vans, small cars, saloons, family crossovers, cool 4x4s, even a self-driving pod that turns into a bus/courier/street kitchen.

They call it an “e-Palette” and you just drop on top what you want.

Clearly, the car we’re most exited about is No 11. Tomorrow’s take on the legendary Lexus LFA.

Akio promised: “Lexus will develop a next-generation battery EV sports car that inherits the driving taste, or the secret sauce, of the performance cultivated via the development of the LFA.

“Acceleration time will be in the low two-second range, cruising range over 435 miles, and with the possible use of solid-state batteries in mind, we will aim to create a truly high-performance battery EV.”

They will.

Toyota started work on solid-state batteries back in 2008. Years ahead of everyone else.

Unsurprisingly, we also like car No5. Whispers say electric MR2. I’m not sure. I reckon it’s the next GR86 from Gazoo Racing.

Akio adores the GR86. It’s his baby. He tests the prototypes. It doesn’t do big numbers but he insists on providing a low-cost sports car for all.

We also like car No 16. Smells like an electric Aygo X to me. And car No 2. The FJ Cruiser isn’t currently sold in the UK but it should be.

And car No 4. Because it’s a Corolla and British-built.

At this point, I should perhaps explain that the front-row cars are badged “bZ” for “beyond Zero”, Toyota’s new electric car sub-brand.

We’ll see car No 15 on our roads next year. It’s called bZ4X and it’s a RAV4-sized SUV starting at £42k.

The middle row is all Lexus and No 12 — called RZ — also goes on sale in 2022.

The back row is a little more confusing. Existing models like the Tacoma pick-up truck and FJ Cruiser will have full EV versions alongside hybrid and maybe even hydrogen models.

Toyota is testing a GR Yaris with a three- cylinder engine that runs on hydrogen fuel.

The green micro vans are much more Total Recall but you can see them happening.

Akio said: “We need to reduce CO2 emissions as much as possible, as soon as possible.

“That is why Toyota wants to prepare as many options as possible for our customers around the world. The EV era is an opportunity and a chance for more variety and more fun.”

Toyota wants to sell 3.5million electric vehicles a year by 2030.

The car in front is Toyota.
