New Vauxhall Astra review: This is more than all right from some angles – and on the inside too

AS promised, here’s a first look at the new Astra. Like it? I do.

More than all right from some angles – and on the inside too.

Here’s a quick run-down. Same “Vizor” front grille as the Mokka.

Twin-screen dash but still with buttons (thank you, Vauxhall).

Head-up display. Wireless Apple CarPlay. More space in all directions.

Decent boot at 422 litres. Fancy LED Pixel lights.

Stiffer chassis. Lower driving position. All sorts of driver assistance tech.

Seats that warm and rub your back. Pretty much all we want from a car, then.

Bodystyles? Five-door hatch and Sports Tourer estate. Engines?

Petrol, diesel and petrol plug-in hybrid (up to 36 miles in EV mode).

The car goes from £21k for the 1.2-litre petrol

All-electric Astra-e to follow later. As will a hybrid VXR.

Prices? From £21k for the 1.2-litre petrol. First deliveries early next year.

So, what you thinking? Astra or Peugeot 308?

They’re the same underneath, so your decision is down to design and what team you support.

Astra is part of the fabric of Britain – we’ve bought 3.2million in 41 years – and this eighth-gen version was designed by Brit Mark Adams.

Astra it is, then.
