Ford Mondeo to be axed after 29 years due to fall in sales and drivers switching to SUVs
THE Ford Mondeo will be axed next year after 29 years in production amid a sales slump and drivers switching to SUVs.
The push towards electric cars also contributed to the end of the saloon, which gave its name to the typical middle-ground voting “Mondeo Man”.
The model, which replaced the Sierra in Europe, was the first “global” Ford car with around five million being sold.
However, just 1,400 of the motors were sold last year, against 86,500 in 2001, US giant Ford revealed.
It said production of the Mondeo will be “phased out” at its plant in Valencia, Spain. Bosses added that it plans for all Ford cars sold in Europe and the UK to be fully electric by 2030, with each model having a hybrid or electric option within five years.
A spokesman added: “In 2020, 39 per cent of Ford’s passenger vehicle sales were SUVs and crossovers. Moreover, customers are showing more confidence in electrification technologies.”
The Mondeo is currently in its fourth generation, with the most recent model launching in 2014.
