MISSUS THE TARGET

VW Tiguan Allspace has impressive space and understated styling – but you pay for it

I WILL never understand the missus.

I was convinced she’d like the VW Tiguan Allspace, especially as she owns a Polo.

But no. She thought it looked boring and a bit dated and she wasn’t fussed about the interior, either.

She did concede that it had lots of space, though, and she was impressed by the 5+2 seating.

That’s the key difference between a Tiguan Allspace and a standard Tiguan.

It has a third row of seats – but they are strictly for little humans and short runs without luggage.

Personally, I like the understated styling. I think it looks more grown up than other shouty me-too SUVs.

But we did agree that it drove like a typically sensible VW.

The 2-litre diesel returned just below 40mpg with reasonable performance.

There is something called SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) tech to trap nasty NOx. So, it’s as clean as many petrols.

Ride and handling is fine, too, and this test car had the added insurance of four-wheel drive, making it ideal transport for a growing family in winter.

The cabin has a solid, quality feel to it combined with a comprehensive list of equipment including 8in touchscreen, digital binnacle and all sorts of connectivity and driver assistance tech.

But you pay for it. This Match trim cost £37,210 and you can soon get carried away ticking boxes and working your way up to the big-daddy R-Line at £45k.

The Tiguan faces stiff competition in an ever-increasing SUV market but the VW name still sells – despite Dieselgate – because motorists see it as the premium mainstream brand.

One final interesting fact. Tiguan was VW’s top seller globally for a brief period last year – but is No3 in Britain, behind Golf and Polo.

Further proof, if needed, that SUVs are part of today’s uniform and further proof that the missus is always right.
