Equation reveals Smart car as the most attractive motor of the last decade – and a Lamborghini was ranked 445th

A SMART car which only has two seats has been named the most attractive motor in the world.

The Smart ForTwo Cabrio was awarded the coveted title using a famous algebraic equation which measures beauty.

Experts at carwow used the golden ratio - a calculation that has been used since 300BC - to name the most aesthetically pleasing motors which have been on sale over the past decade.

The £23,000 two-seater beat out more than 600 different models to be named the most aesthetically pleasing motor, being 98.83 per cent "accurate" to the rule.

The golden ratio is an algebraic equation that has been used by designers to compare the dimensions of an object and understand what makes things pleasing to the eye.

It was previously used to name George Clooney as the world's most handsome face.

Surprisingly, some of the world's most impressive supercars didn't fare very well in the test, with the Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari 448 ranked 445th and 557th respectively.

The Ford Fiesta ST was crowned the ugliest car sold since 2010, only conforming to the ratio by 34.31 per cent.

It was closely followed by the Mercedes GLC 63 AMG Coupe, Audi A1 Sportback and Audi RS7 Sportback.

Mat Watson, car expert at carwow said: "For thousands of years now, the golden ratio has been linked to beauty and design, with artists like Salvador Dali using it in their works, and George Clooney being named the most beautiful man alive because of how well his chiselled good looks fit the ratio.

"Obviously the golden ratio doesn’t tell you everything about the beauty of a car, like the sound it makes when you rev the engine, the finish of the interior or that ‘new car smell’, but it is interesting to see how closely car manufacturers stick to these dimensions and apply it to the ‘faces’ of some of the most popular cars available today.

"At first though, we were shocked to find out that the Smart car of all cars released this decade was our ‘Clooney’.

"The first thought when you mention a Smart car probably isn’t dashing good looks, but when you think about the precision that has gone into every element of its design to create a car so small, but so effective, it actually makes a lot of sense."
