How you could save up to £8,000 on a small car – and you don’t even need to shop around
PILE them high and sell them cheap.
That was the motto of Tesco founder Jack Cohen 100 years ago.
You don’t need me to tell you he did OK for himself.
The same strategy is now working wonders for car supermarkets such as Motorpoint.
It buys its stock in bulk, which means it can sell on to customers for less. Actually, make that much less.
Look at the seven small cars featured in our supermarket sweep. They are mostly just a year old with low mileage, manufacturer warranty and the latest connectivity tech — yet they are all between £5,000 and £8,000 cheaper than new.
That 19-reg Vauxhall Corsa SRi is almost HALF-PRICE.
Motorpoint has 13 branches dotted around the UK, from Swansea to Glasgow, with around 500 cars at each site.
'THE CHOICE WAS INCREDIBLE'
Which means there’s no need to spend the weekend trawling around umpteen dealerships with a wishlist of cars to look at. You can see them all in one place.
Ellie Evans, 17, passed her L-test in the morning and drove home from Motorpoint Newport two hours later in an 18-reg Fiat 500.
She told me: “The choice was incredible. I had a list but as soon as I saw the Fiat 500, I knew it was the car I wanted.
“It’s really cool inside and out, plus I can link my phone and music with Bluetooth.”
Mum Josephine said: “We saved thousands of pounds. And because all the cars have low mileage and long warranties, it gives you the peace of mind you want as a parent.”
Chris Brown, general manager at Motorpoint Newport, has seen a sharp rise in the number of parents helping kids buy their first wheels.
He said: “Parents are looking for the safer option. They don’t want a banger but a nearly-new car with low mileage and the security of the bulk of the manufacturer warranty.
“They also like the flexibility of either paying cash or taking out monthly PCP finance with low deposits and the option of swapping to another car after three years. That really suits modern lifestyles.”
Hold on a minute, my friend. What’s this tucked away in a corner?
