A CHEAP spray could help keep your windscreen clear of rain and snow this winter.

British drivers could also avoid costly fines and points on their licence by applying the glass treatment before getting behind the wheel.

A £25 Duxback glass treatment offered at Halfords Autocentres prevents ice and water forming on your windscreen, making it much easier to remove.

Originally developed for the airline industry, the hydrophobic coating causes water to bead on impact with glass.

It also means if you're driving over 40mph in wet conditions, you will not need to use your windscreen wipers as the rain runs straight off.

And at slower speeds, the water will just spot rather than spreading across the whole windscreen.

Independent testing by German testing experts TÜV Thüringen found that driving visibility during rain improved by 35 per cent when using the spray.

The treatment only takes one hour to be applied by Halfords technicians and can last up to six months.

As the cold weather starts to set in, drivers are urged to prepare their motors for poor conditions.

In the rush to get to work, plenty will simply clear off just enough ice so that they can see through a tiny portion while leaving the rest obscured.

But any driver caught with just a small window to see through - referred to as "porthole vision" - could be subject to harsh penalties from police.

If you can't see through the whole windscreen, police can hit you with a £60 fine.

And if your vehicle condition is classified as "dangerous", you could be fined as much as £2,500 in court and even banned from the road.

Aaron Edwards, spokesman for Halfords Autocentres, said: "Cold weather can play havoc with our cars.

"Our research shows that motorists are taking potentially dangerous short-cuts to keep their windscreens clear.

"Drivers should take the extra time to prepare their cars for winter conditions or visit Halfords Autocentres where a Duxback treatment can keep your windscreens ice-free for up to six months."
