You can live in Fred West or Kray Twins’ former cells as prison to be transformed into luxury flats…but it’s also home to 120 bodies
PROPERTY developers will be hoping to make a killing after turning the prison that housed murderers Fred West and the Kray twins into luxury flats.
Gloucester Prison first opened its doors in 1792 and played host to dozens of hangings before closing in 2013.
Under plans approved earlier this month the original buildings on the site will be transformed into 38 one, two and three-bedroom flats.
Seven new buildings will house another 164 apartments bringing the total to 202.
The prison’s listed chapel wing and heritage centre will remain open to the public.
Developers also plan to keep its “indomitable” perimeter walls intact as well as constructing a viewing platform above the 12th century Castle Keep, which was discovered during archaeological works.
The prison’s former exercise yards will be landscaped with new trees planted and 114 car parking spaces created.
The grounds are thought to hold the unmarked graves of 120 dead prisoners.
Evil Fred West, who murdered at least 10 girls with twisted wife Rose, was a prisoner in the jail in 1994.
The Kray twins served time there after their reign of terror came to an end in March 1969 when they were both sentenced to life imprisonment.
Gloucester City Council’s planning committee voted unanimously to approve the plans, put forward by luxury developers City & Country, on May 1.

Richard Winsborough, associate director of planning at City & Country, said: “This is a fantastic outcome for Gloucester Prison and for the wider regeneration of the Quayside and Blackfriars area.
“Working closely with the council, consultees and the community we have developed plans that will create a long-term and viable future use for the prison.
“The historic features of the site are crucial elements of our plans, and thanks to the creation of a heritage space these can be enjoyed by all.”
