The building which is half a mile from the beach in Eastney, Portsmouth, Hants, was originally the headquarters of the Royal Marine Artillery who moved in around 1867.

Colin Shairp, of Fine and Country Southern Hampshire estate agents who are selling the property, said: "You have to hand it to the architects - they've ensured time doesn't stand still at this home.

"This unique apartment makes the most of its elevated setting.

"It wins every time when it comes to finding the tallest building in the neighbourhood.

"Instead of surround sound there's surround landscape and to crown it all there's a balustraded rooftop complete with its own flagpole accessed via a stone spiral staircase.

"Portsea Island has a rich heritage of buildings from its Naval past but this has to be one of the most outstanding adaptations to domestic use that can be found anywhere."

He added: "The sea horizon is approximately 20 miles distant, while to the sides the property looks along the coast across Hayling Island in one direction and across Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight and along the Solent in the other.

"At the rear, Portsdown Hill frames the outlook.

"The good news for those who are short on time to complete a purchase is that this property has no onward chain, which should help speed up the buying process."
