This former boozer that was once the Kray twin’s local has hit the market for £1.2million

Located on Vallance Road, it boasts three bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, two reception rooms, two bathrooms, a shower room and a roof terrace.

In the early 20th century, when it was known as The Earl Grey, it’s said to have played host to both Lenin and Trotsky.

It was converted into a women’s refuge in the 1920s, before being used as a pub again during the period that hardmen Ronnie and Reggie lived on the same street.

Current owner Sally Williams said: “The home is full of character. There are certain parts of the architecture that I really like – it’s not a typical family home.

“I think it would be very suitable for a painter to live here or, as it’s one of the few homes on the street with a basement, it would be perfect for a musician.

“Philanthropist Mary Hughes lived in this house, using it as a women’s refuge. It was a place to give women and girls somewhere to sleep and be safe.

“Mary would give up her own bed to others and would sleep on the floor.

“She died in her 80s in 1941 after dedicating her whole life to helping poor people.

Current owner Sally Richards describes it ‘as not a typical family home’

“While it was a refuge the basement was used for meetings, which were often communist, I was told that Lenin and Trotsky attended meetings there.”

Director at Fine & Country East London Adam Tahir said: “It’s a very quirky house with lots of the original features still in place.

“Normally, a former pub like this will be converted into flats, but luckily the current owners restored this into a beautiful house.

“We expect artistic people to want to live here as it is a trendy area.

This bathroom doesn’t afford its user a great deal of privacy

“In fact, the current owners are artists and well-known celebrities like Robert Pattinson and Paloma Faith have both viewed the property.

“It’s easy to see why, as lots of affluent young people will want to live in a home with such an interesting history.

“Not only was this a refuge for the poor and needy of east London, but it was also a pub during the time that the Kray Twins lived on the street, so it certainly has a colourful history.”
