Swap sweet treats for these healthy lunchbox fillers that also save you money — plus play to win £50k on the Sun Savers Raffle

FILLING lunchboxes with sweet treats is all too easy.

But new reports suggest that a sugar-free rule could be implemented in schools due to the rise of tooth decay in children.

We all deserve a treat but if you want to keep your lunchboxes a bit healthier, here are some sweet swaps that won’t break the bank.

FIVE A DAY: Swap those sweet treats out for a juicy piece of fruit, with a pack of six mini apples on offer at Sainsbury’s for 60p or check Aldi’s super six offer — this week mini pears are just 45p a pack. Instead of pricey pre-packaged fruit salads, blend a banana, a cup of frozen berries and water for a cheap smoothie that can be popped into lunchboxes.

FLAVOUR FIX: Change up the juice carton or fizzy drink with a bottle of fruity water. Add a slice of lemon (30p, Asda) for a dash of vitamin C and zesty flavour — it’s cheaper than Volvic lemon & lime water, £1.05 at Tesco. Berries, lime and orange also work well, so give your favourite a try.

TOP OF THE POPS: Home-popped popcorn is a top cash-saving lunchbox filler. Grab a bag of popcorn kernels from Tesco for 99p and pop in an oil of your choice — I like coconut oil for a healthy, sweeter option, £1 at Holland and Barrett (usually £2.99). Toss it all in the pan and let the popping begin, bag it up in separate airtight lunch bags and you could even add a sprinkle of cinnamon.

POT-STARS: Yoghurt is a lunch-box favourite. I like Little Yeos pots (head to Morrisons to get six for £1.50 or two packs for £2). You could also buy a pot of Fage Greek yoghurt, now £2 at Tesco instead of £2.75, and divide it into five smaller pots, blend with fresh fruit or simply add some chopped fruit or nuts on top daily for a healthy snack.
