DO you feel like you are always wasting money?
Each person in the UK throws away five times their own body weight in rubbish per year, which is bad news for the environment.
To mark the start of , here are some tiny tweaks that can make a difference:
Repack it: The average shopper uses approximately 13,000 plastic bags over their lifetime. With the introduction of the 10p charge, that is £1,300 wasted.
Instead, take your own shopping tubs, boxes or crates that fit in your boot.
Transfer shopping from the till to the tubs in the trolley and load into your car. It is also super easy to carry them into the house this way.
Save: More than £1,000 over your lifetime
Reuse it: As a nation, we spend loads on wipes and kitchen roll — another example of how we are throwing money away.
Buy two rolls of Plenty kitchen roll for £2.50 at Asda when you do your big shop. Or you pick up a two-pack of microfibre cloths for just 85p.
Save: £2.50 every time you shop
Repost it: There is no need to buy envelopes or parcel wrap.
Instead, open post carefully and re-address and reuse when you need it. A4 padded envelopes cost around £1.50 a time. Use six a year and that is £9. Re-use and it is free.
Save: £1.50 a time on padded envelopes
Recharge it: A pack of four AA batteries costs around £4 per pack. But you can pick up rechargeable versions for around £8 a pack on eBay.
If you use one pack a month, the normal batteries will cost you £16 over four months. In four months, you will earn back the money you spent on rechargeable ones.
Save: up to £4 per month
Retire it: The less food you throw away and more recycling you do, the fewer bin bags you will need.
Supermarket own-brand versions cost around £2 a roll for 20, making them 10p a bag. Use two bags less a week and that saves you 80p a month.
Save: £9.60 per year
