Coin collecting site Change Checker has updated its scarcity index for the past three months, and it found that the 50p Kew Gardens coin is still the most sought after in its 50p category.

In January, the commemorative coin was named the most valuable one of last year.

The index doesn't tell you the coins' worth, but it'll tell you which ones are popular among collectors so you'll know which coins people are willing to pay more for.

Of course, a coin is only worth what someone will pay for it so there's no guarantee that yours will make you a mint, yet it could be worth a try.

Generally, collectors look at the mintage figures of a coin to assess its value, but rather than just basing a coin’s value on this, Change Checker has looked at two other pieces of information.

This includes how many of each coin are listed as “collected” by members of the site, which indicates how easy it is to find a particular coin.

The experts also looked at the number of times a design has been requested as a swap, showing how many collectors currently want it.

Below are the rarest coins currently around.

50p Kew Gardens - £385

The coin was first launched back in 2009 to celebrate 250 years since London's Kew Gardens opened its gates.

A small batch of 210,000 of the coins were released into circulation and these ones are worth a mint, even if they're a little more damaged.

This is driving up prices as one of the first coins minted recently sold for £385 on after receiving 22 bids.

It's not far behind the £400 price tag one of the coins sold for in September last year.

Around the same time, an even rarer GOLD Kew Gardens 50p sold for a shocking £2,000 even though it was only predicted to sell for between £400 and £600.

Last year, the Royal Mint also re-issued the Kew Gardens coins and although they can still make you money, it's the older versions that sell for the highest amounts.

The second rarest and most collectable 50p coin is currently the Olympic football coin.

This coin was probably the most talked about Olympic coin because its design was actually a diagram explaining the off-side rule.

Only 1,125,500 of these coins made it in to circulation.

One silver coin recently sold for £41 on - 82 times its original value - after receiving 21 bids.

The popularity of the coin is driving up prices and one recently sold for £2.35 on .

Is your small change worth a fortune?

IF you think that you might have a rare coin then you might be able to make a real mint.

The most valuable coins are usually those with a low mintage or an error.

These are often deemed the most valuable by collectors.

You should check how much the coin is selling for on eBay.

Search the full name of the coin, select the "sold" listing and then toggle the search to "highest value".

It will give you an idea of the amount of money that the coin is going for.

You can either choose to sell the coin on eBay or through a specialist like ChangeChecker.org.

If you choose the auction website then remember to set a minimum price that is higher or at the very least equal to the face value of the coin.

Even if your coin “sells” on eBay for a high price there’s no guarantee that the buyer will cough up.

It its terms and conditions, the auction website states that bidders enter a “legally binding contract to purchase an item”, but there’s no way to enforce this rule in reality.

The most eBay can do is add a note to their account for the unpaid item or remove their ability to bid and buy.

A rare Olympic 50p coin recently sold on eBay for £590 - that's more than 1,180 times its face value.

It's not the only coin tracker available - ChangeChecker.org launched its own eBay league table this time last year.
