CLUCKING GOOD

KFC has been secretly serving its Chizza – a chicken pizza – in the UK

FAST food fans listen up because KFC has secretly been serving its Chizza dish in the UK.

It’s exactly what it sounds like – a fried chicken base topped with two-tone cheese, pepperoni, red and green peppers and pizza sauce.

The Chizza has a base made from fried chicken that’s been cut into quarters

The meal was first launched in Singapore two years ago and a year later it hinted that it may bring it to the UK after tweeting a photo of the creation.

The pizza was trialled for a few months back in 2018 at a handful of restaurants in Salford, Leeds and Newcastle, according to , although KFC won’t tell us exactly which restaurants.

The base is made from a round slab of chicken that’s been deep fried in the Colonel’s Original Recipe.

The meal serves one and costs £4.49 but you can upgrade it to include a drink for an extra 50p.

If you want a side of fries then you’ll have to pay for them separately.

The dish clocks in at 550 calories, but it’s cut into four slices just like a dough-based pizza, so there’s no need to eat it all in one sitting.

Each quarter is only big enough for one piece of pepperoni so they’re much smaller than your typical pizza.

We’re yet to try the bizarre menu item but the fast food blogger behind BurgerLad, Simon Dukes, 40, from Cheltenham, has already managed to get his chops around them.

He reckons the overall taste is more pizza than chicken, thanks to the “quite strong” sauce smothered on the base.

While the foodie gives KFC a “gold star” for thinking outside the box, he doesn’t reckon it will knock the Zinger burger off the top spot.

He wrote: “I wasn’t really sure if I was going to enjoy it and is clearly a bit messy to eat. KFC’s Chizza is slightly strange, but good, and I do very much like the innovation….

KFC hints its fried chicken pizza is coming to the UK and customers are excited

“It is a reasonable effort taste-wise. The pizza sauce overlaid everything so much that KFC’s secret blend of herbs and spices was neither here nor there.

“It was also very cheesy, which is a good thing.

“You get a touch of the pepperoni, and definitely the texture of the chicken in the base and the sensation is like you are eating a pizza of sorts.”

Overall, he feels it’s the type of dish you might order a couple of times but it’s not likely to become your regular.

Unfortunately, the trial ended at the end of last year and KFC has told us that it has no plans to make trial it again or make it a permanent menu item.

A KFC spokesperson said: “We’re all big fans of the Chizza. We’ve no plans to bring it back yet but who knows what the future may hold.”

KFC has 890 stores in the UK, around 845 of which are franchises.

Hungry customers can now get their Papa John’s pizzas delivered to the park, beach or stadiums across the UK.
