The National Careers Service (NCS) has compiled a list of the ten hottest jobs of the next decade
SEVEN in ten parents admit they do not fully understand what their child does for a living, say careers experts.
It is being dubbed the “job generation gap”, with technology rapidly transforming the jobs market and new roles being created that did not exist five years ago.
The National Careers Service (NCS) has developed the Top Ten Jobs of Tomorrow, covering the most in-demand work over the next decade.
It says half of mums and dads believe they would not be able to do their child’s job, with 22 per cent confessing they would be sacked if they tried. The list will help parents keep up with changing job trends — and make sure jobseekers have the skills employers want.
It is based on employer need and what young people are searching for online. Experts claim choosing a job from the list will help future-proof careers.
NCS careers adviser Tom Laws said: “We’re finding more and more people considering their futures, are hunting jobs that didn’t exist several years ago.
“Our lives are hugely influenced by technology and this is really influencing the career paths they’re choosing to take. Many of us will remember a time before social media even existed, yet now whole careers are built around it. Roles in AI, cyber security and data are increasingly popular.”
Peter Nuttall is following this type of career path and is now a data analyst-statistician with the National Careers Service in Newcastle. The 44-year-old began work in customer service and became a marketing executive covering data reporting before moving into his current area.
Peter, from Newcastle, says: “I identify trends, create models, collect numerical info and present results. What I do lets our organisation continuously improve the service we offer and data I produce helps us make accurate predictions.
“I can bring innovative change to the NCS and by using mass amounts of historical data, I can paint a picture for a better future.”

- Data analyst-statistician: Identify trends, create models, collect numerical information and present results.
- AI expert: Design machines that simulate human intelligence.
- Marketing executive: Promote a company’s products, services or brand.
- Software developer: Design, build and test computer programs.
- User experience designer: Create websites, apps and software.
- Robotics engineer: Design robotic systems.
- Human resources officer: Hire employees, help to develop their careers and look after employee relations, benefits and welfare.
- Investment analyst: Help stock market traders, stockbrokers and fund managers make investment decisions.
- Cyber intelligence officer: Gather information about where threats to IT systems come from and how they work.
- Social media manager: Communicate with organisations’ customers and clients through social media channels.

TOWIE’S Ferne McCann is urging young people to help those in need by signing up to the Royal Voluntary Service. Volunteering can boost your CV – and studies show it can improve wellbeing as helpers feel happier and less lonely.
Mum-of-one Ferne helped out at a social centre in West Sussex, which runs daily activities for older people. She says: “Volunteering is often seen as something we only do when we retire but any time you can give can make a huge difference to someone’s life. And the benefits on your health and wellbeing are just incredible at any age.”

Avoid any slip-ups over pay
ARE you getting what you are owed? While 99 per cent of us get a payslip, just 62 per cent understand it, research shows. Reforms introduced this month mean almost 300,000 workers who did not receive a payslip will now do so.
To support the changes a new government campaign is urging staff to check their payslip. Business Secretary Greg Clark said the move was part of the Government’s commitment “to build a labour market that rewards people for hard work, celebrates good employers and boosts productivity”.
Here are some tips on checking your payslip:
- You should receive your payslip on or before pay day. It can be on paper, sent by email, or available online.
- Your gross pay includes your full pay (overtime, commission or bonuses) before any tax or National Insurance has been taken off.
- If you’re paid hourly, your payslip will show how many hours you worked.
- It will detail deductions, from tax and National Insurance, to pension and student loan.
- Net pay is the amount you get after all the deductions have been made.
- Check your tax code against your tax-code letter. If it is wrong you may be paying the wrong amount of tax.
