COUGH UP FOR CASH

The firm behind 10,500 UK ATMs will begin charging customers 95p to withdraw cash

Notemachine has announced it will introduce the fee to about half of its machines after banks slashed the fees they pay to free ATM operators

A FIRM that owns a fifth of the UK’s free cash machines will start charging customers nearly £1 to withdraw money, it emerged last night.

Notemachine will reportedly introduce a new 95p fee for about half of its 10,500 devices following changes in how they are funded.

The change will come as a blow to the elderly, low earners and small businesses and may result in machines being shut down if they become unprofitable.

It comes after high street banks slashed the fees they pay to free ATM operators for each withdrawal from 25p to 22.5p.

Notemachine chief Peter McNamara told The Daily Mail: “It’s just not sustainable and it’s causing a collapse in the number of ATMs in the country.”

The firm has not set a date for the new charge and says its machines at supermarkets and other big businesses are likely to remain free to use.

Cash machines across the UK are shutting down at a rate of 300 every month, alarming figures have revealed.

Experts have warned that the rapid closures to ATMS will cripple small firms, which rely on cash payments.

Last year, we revealed that a staggering three quarters of UK hospitals with pay-to-use cash machines have no free alternatives - leaving patients and relatives with no choice but to use the costly ATMS.
